Congratulations to Sarah Krasniuk, who won the First Place award at the 2002 Life and Health Sciences Research Expo for her research project "Experiences Of Seniors Accessing Alternative Transportation In Rural Communities Of Saskatchewan"!  Well done!

The Life and Health Sciences Research Expo acknowledges exemplary research and learning activity at the University of Saskatchewan. The annual event returns in a virtual format once again to showcase interdisciplinary health science research taking place on campus and throughout the province. Competition categories will explore basic, translational, clinical, and applied science as well as social and population health.

Sarah's Project Background:

In Saskatchewan, over a third of the residents live in rural communities, approximately 20% whom are seniors. Data shows that seniors in rural areas often have poorer health (e.g., dementia) compared to their urban counterparts, which may result in a restriction of driving activity. As more than 50% of rural communities in Saskatchewan do not have alternative transportation (e.g., public transportation, taxis), those who no longer drive rely on others for rides to access essential services (e.g., healthcare). However, this is challenging when friends or family work, are busy, or move away. To address this issue, the purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of seniors accessing alternative transportation in rural communities.
