Expo success for SPH students
Four School of Public Health (SPH) students won prizes at the first University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Life and Health Sciences Research Expo poster session on Friday, May 5.
Master of Public Health (MPH) student Stephanie McClean claimed first prize in the community health – general category for her poster on cost-minimization analysis of two different screening methods for jaundice in newborn babies.
McClean, who was happily surprised with her win, explained that her poster was a collaborative project between the SPH and Saskatoon Health Region (SHR). The project assessed the cost of two universal jaundice screening methods currently used by SHR, and in three different settings; hospital, urban and rural.
Two other SPH students, both pursuing a PhD in the school’s vaccinology and immunotherapeutics thesis program, also claimed first prize in their respective categories.
GuanQun Liu came top in the virology category for his poster titled Direct Interaction Between RIG-I and Influenza A Virus Polymerase Contributes to Viral Nucleocapsid Sensing.
Kuan Zhang was awarded top prize in the interdisciplinary category for her poster on Bovine Herpesvirus-1. She took part in the poster session as an opportunity to reach out to other researchers and students. "Sharing my research helps me to improve and other peoples' work inspires me," she said.
Rounding off the school's accolades, MPH student Edris Haghir took second place in the infectious diseases category for his poster on factors associated with sexually transmitted infection among young adults in Canada.
The Life and Health Sciences Research Expo gathered faculty and students from the diverse health science disciplines at the U of S to celebrate the exemplary and interdisciplinary research activity taking place. In addition to the poster session, the two-day event included a gala dinner and lectures by prominent keynote speakers.
